P-chem is often regarded as a rite of passage. Many people who take it find it challenging, but I didn't find it any more or less challenging than other chemistry courses. It helps if you're comfortable with calculus up through Calculus III. If you can squeeze in Differential Equations and Linear Algebra beforehand, that's even better. If not, don't panic – you should still be able to manage P-chem just fine.
I think the main reason people tend to find P-chem difficult is that it's very different from most other chem classes. When you study organic chemistry, for example, the emphasis is on what organic compounds can do and how they will react. There's a lot of talk about nucleophiles, electrophiles, oxidation, reduction, free radicals, condensation, dehydration, and so on. When you hit P-chem, it's not about WHAT happens or even HOW it happens, but rather WHY it all works to begin with. You'll study about what atoms actually do during a chemical reaction and get into the thermodynamics and the quantum mechanics of reactions. It's mostly theoretical as opposed to practical knowledge. You'll be writing mathematical equations more than chemical reaction mechanisms. It's fascinating stuff, but it can be a challenge to wrap your head around it, if you take my meaning.
