It’s important, to a certain extent.
I’m a firm believer that every sign is compatible with any other sign, provided that you are willing to put up with or ignore certain things. If not, then only date signs that you’re compatible with (in your case, you would be compatible with other the Earth signs, Virgo and Taurus, and Water signs Scorpio and Pisces, Cancer being your opposite). If, however, you’re willing to be open, feel free to date anyone.
I personally love Aquarians. I love how they question everything instead of just taking everything that’s given to them. They’re funny and opinionated.
The problem with a lot of astrology is that most of it is based on assumptions. According to ‘cheap’ astrology, Capricorns are supposed to be these stodgy, boring people who work and complain all day, which is why we’re often said to be incompatible with Aquarius. The truth is, Capricorns have a great sense of humor (it’s dry humor, really, like sarcasm) and we’re open-minded as well.

You should be aware that in order to do an accurate compatibility reading an entire chart must be cast an then compared. To do this by Sun signs is vastly inaccurate as everyone has many other influences working in their chart, apart form their Sun signs.
That's and interesting question. I asked myself that very question because almost every single Astrology book I read say the same thing: That Scorpio/Aquarius match is the worst because our personalities are polar opposites.
But yet, I have a mad crush on an Aquarius guy right now! So I guess it's like wanting what you can't have, or what you know is bad for you. Opposites attract I suppose.
But also you have to factor in maturity level of both signs, and other planetary influences in their chart to get a clearer picture.

Astrology is pretty accurate and the rest is free will. As for compatibility in relationships, the Sun/Moon combination gives you a general idea if their is some hope.
You need to look at Venus and Mars and where they fall in his or her chart and vice-versa. This way, you can see where you their may be tension and, what area that is stress-free.
